BioCord™ pilot system proves mettle for cold-weather ammonia removal

Pulp and Paper | DATE POSTED: September 13, 2021

Onsite wastewater lagoons at a petrochemical manufacturing plant in Western Canada were experiencing difficulty in meeting the ammonia discharge limit during cold-weather conditions. The three-cell lagoon system provides pretreatment of the facility’s sanitary and process wastewater before the effluent is released to the municipal sewer. But during the winter months, the system struggles to achieve the discharge limit set by the city.

Learn how our simple, low-energy BioCord pilot system demonstrated 97% ammonia removal under some tough conditions.

Simplifying arsenic sludge management at a gold mine

Mining | DATE POSTED: August 19, 2021

Arsenic sludge management

Arsenic-laden groundwater continually infiltrates the shafts of a gold mine in Western Canada. As it’s pumped out, an onsite treatment system removes the arsenic to produce effluent that can be safely released. But the system also produces large volumes of sludge—about 1,900 litres every 45 minutes. The sludge was a challenge for the site’s existing media filtration system and a faster, more reliable and more cost-effective solution was needed. Learn how the Bishop Solids Management Solution provided a simple, low-energy solution that achieves dewatering, filtration and containment in a single step.

Water Treatment for Heavy Metals Removal

Mining | DATE POSTED: March 31, 2017

In the summer of 2015, Geo-Dredging and Dewatering Inc was chosen by the general contractor to treat contaminated water from an abandoned mine in Central Ontario. The water was contaminated with arsenic, cobalt, copper, and nickel. Geodredging technicians were able to reduce all contaminants to below the effluent limits using chemical treatment and Geotube® technology for heavy metals removal.

Successful Dewatering of Acid Mine Drainage Materials

Mining | DATE POSTED: April 26, 2016

During the construction of interstate 99, PA, pyretic rock from previous mining was uncovered, that when exposed to oxygen and water creates heavy metals and acids. Over 700,000 cubic yards of pyretic rock was uncovered and allowed to drain into settling ponds. From here Geotube® and polymer technology was able to trap the hazardous material.

Geotube® Container Offers Innovative Solution for Disposal of Coal Mine Slurry Waste

Mining | DATE POSTED: April 26, 2016

Slurry as a by-product from the North river Mine, Alabama, required dredging and removal from site. Geotube® technology was selected as the most efficient and cost effective method. Four layers of geotubes consisting over 240 containers were used to remove 200,000 cubic yards of material. The site was then available for remediation.

Dewatering/Filtering Drilling Sediments in De Pere and Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Mining | DATE POSTED: April 26, 2016

To suppress explosions, mines near the Manitowic River in Wisconsin, were flooding the drill shafts. To resurface this water, Wisconsin DNR had placed a permit level of 40mg/L TSS that the mining company had to achieve. Geotube® technology was utilized filtering 8 months of mining residuals to below the permit level.
