BioCord™ Research Project

Bishop Water Partners With Research Councils and Academic Institutions for the Advancement of BioCord™ Understanding

In the summer of 2011 Bishop Water Technologies partnered with the Bonnechere Valley Township to undertake a research project using a pilot BioCord Reactor system at the Eganville Sewage Treatment Plant, Ontario. The purpose of this project was to determine the effectiveness of the BioCord system in treating raw sewage, mixed liquor suspended solids and filtrate produced by the GeotubeĀ® dewatering process.

Using a simple aerobic-anaerobic-settling BioCord setup designed to mimic a lagoon, results were positive from the beginning and showed up to a 90% reduction in TSS, BOD and Phosphorous. Influent levels of ammonia also fell over 30% throughout the production. The onset of 2012 saw Bishop Water redesign the system to a denitrification and nitrification setup shown below (Fig.1). This setup worked well and gave a constant reduction of ammonia levels to below 1mg/L

In 2013, in coherence with industry demand, Bishop Water began a 2 settling, 2 tank aerobic process to remove ammonia to levels below 1mg/L while stressing the system (Fig.2). This system worked extremely well meeting the ammonia level goal, with the added bonus of high phosphorous removal through every season of the year. In the spring of 2014, the Eganville BioCord project was transferred to the Renfrew Wastewater treatment plant with the same goals. Treating raw wastewater (post-screening) as an influent, the BioCord has been consistent in meeting its targets to date.

Research Partners

Working with academic institutions has been largely helpful on the BioCord project, helping to produce credibly backed third party data. In 2013, Bishop Water began working with the University of Ottawa to determine the rates of growth and activity of nitrifying bacteria on the BioCord. Through this research, Bishop Water was able to tailor the system for maximum ammonia removal and efficiency, through the optimization of the aeration systems and tank selection. In 2015, Bishop Water partnered with Algonquin College to determine the anaerobic/aerobic bacteria levels throughout the pilot system. The activity of the bacteria on the BioCord media was tested under various stresses. This was done using ATP (adenosine triphosphate) detection. This research showed the extreme capabilities of the system to produce low ammonia levels in the quickest way possible.

Bishop Water also worked with University of Windsor in 2015 to determine the most ideal BioCord™ media. This small-scale project was designed to determine the best media shape and material for wastewater treatment. This experiment discovered that the different media types were able to achieve different treatment goals.

The BioCord research project is still underway in Renfrew, testing and manipulating different scenarios to create the most efficient system possible. Data from this project has contributed to the implementation of the BioCord™ system into various Lagoons and Treatment plants.
