Unlocking hidden savings: What to consider when comparing the cost of chemical phosphorus removal

When choosing coagulants for phosphorus removal, it’s common to prioritize the cost of the chemical as a key factor in the decision-making process. However, a myopic focus on only the price tag can lead to overlooking operational-based savings. Evaluating factors such as dosage rates, sludge production and clarifier performance can lead to a well-informed decision that maximizes savings throughout the entire treatment process.

ClariPhos®, a unique coagulant made with rare earth elements, offers several advantages that can significantly improve the cost-effectiveness of phosphorus removal.

Lower dose rate

Typically, ClariPhos dosed at 30 to 70% lower rate than alternatives. This lower dose is possible because ClariPhos binds to phosphorus at a 1:1 molar ratio. Al/Fe coagulants bind at a ratio of approximately 5:2, and can rise as high as 8:1 to achieve higher levels of phosphorus removal. Lower dose rates also mean fewer totes need to be shipped, handled and stored.

Reduced sludge production

ClariPhos can reduce sludge production by as much as 50%, thanks to its reduced dosage rates and dense precipitate. The reduction in sludge volume also helps lower sludge dewatering costs and dramatically decreases trucking costs.

Improved clarifier performance

ClariPhos forms a dense, stable precipitate that settles up to two times faster than alternatives. This is because the atomic weight of rare earth elements is much higher than aluminum or iron alternatives. As a result, ClariPhos can improve clarifier performance, reduce carryover of suspended solids and potentially eliminate the need for tertiary filtration systems.
